AFL-CIO Endorses Commissioner Peter Hubbard for Re-Election

Georgia Labor Unions Support Seen as Pivotal in Deciding Control of PSC

(Atlanta, Georgia) – The Georgia American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), representing the interests of around 500,000 unionized workers, endorsed Public Service Commissioner Peter Hubbard in his re-election bid for a full six year term. The endorsement, seen as pivotal in races with tight statewide margins, further underscores the divide between Hubbard and his opponent. 

“The best results for Georgians come from projects built by union labor, and I’m committed to growing the number of union jobs in this state,” said Commissioner Peter Hubbard. “I’m proud to stand with organized labor in the fight for working families, and I think it’s time that the Public Service Commission created an official Labor Advisory Board. The workers who power Georgia should have a seat at the table.” 

The endorsement comes at a time of cautious optimism for organized labor. Despite continuous attacks from boss-aligned actors in state and federal government, union density has continued to grow in Georgia over recent years - reaching a new high water mark of 5% in 2025. The advent of generative artificial intelligence has supported stronger job growth among the building and trades, even as it generates monumental uncertainty in other fields.

“Our membership was clear in their preference for Commissioner Hubbard,” said Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia AFL-CIO James Williams. “Higher wages, better benefits, and more union jobs - that’s how we repair this economy. Peter understands that math, and he’s committed to growing our ranks however he can.”

While the underlying tensions between workers positively and negatively impacted by artificial intelligence will continue to play out, there is no solution that doesn’t involve moving forward together, with class and worker solidarity, and that can only be achieved through direct dialogue between respected partners who all have a secure seat at the table. Commissioner Hubbard, for his part, will never stop searching for paths forward that do the most good for the most people. 

“As long as we continue to do business under anti-worker rules like the so-called ‘right to work,’ we’ll see wages decline and communities left behind,” Commissioner Hubbard added. “I’m watching proposals to gut union jobs like the privatization of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Transportation Security Administration carefully. Southern workers need a union, not exploitation to enrich corporate profits.”
